Annual Campaign

Each year since 2006 the Uptown Music Collective has run its Annual Fundraising Campaign, which has supported many of the school’s projects and programs. With this, our 10th year as a nonprofit, we have changed the focus of the campaign to directly support the Collective’s Free Class and Workshop Initiative. This initiative gives all Collective students free access to our renowned classes & workshops.   For more information on this initiative and the Annual Campaign itself, please read the letter below from UMC Founder and Executive Director Dave Brumbaugh, and then make a donation by clicking the donate button at the top of the page. You can also make a donation by making a check payable to the Uptown Music Collective and mailing it to 144 West Third St. Suite 201. Williamsport, Pa 17701. Thank you in advance for your support!

***UPDATE*** To date we have raised 67% of our goal! Thank you to everyone who has supported this year’s campaign so far!

Dear Friends,

I hope this letter finds you well, happy and excited for the coming year.

I am writing to you today to ask for your support of the Uptown Music Collective’s 2016-2017 Annual Fundraising Campaign. This campaign is dedicated to raising funds to keep our nonprofit music school’s theory classes and style based workshops free for all students.

The Uptown Music Collective’s Free Class and Workshop Initiative allows all students free access to the school’s weekly classes and workshops. This makes it possible for each student to take part in one 16-week class and two 16-week workshops each semester. That’s 3 additional hours of expert instruction each week at no additional charge!

As an organization that focuses on young people, our classes and workshops are one of our fundamental engagement and peer building pieces.  Which makes student participation in this integral part of our program a high priority.

As I see it, some of the key problems with our youth today revolve around a lack of engagement, along with constant overwhelm, and lowered expectations. Our modern world moves too fast, giving them too much information, and too many ways to temporarily access that information without earning it.

The Uptown Music Collective engages students by focusing on modern music education. That’s our advantage. The fact that we teach something that they love, and want to take part in. We then use that connection to inspire them to practice, study, and to appreciate all music. While also teaching discipline, responsibility, and leadership skills.

As our modern world slowly deemphasizes human connection in favor of constant contact through social media. The UMC Program strives to build human connection through weekly face to face musical encounters with like-minded classmates and caring, knowledgeable instructors. These shared experiences then lay the foundation for the development of a powerful peer group. A support system, that connects all UMC students and staff members through their time with us, and beyond.

Our culture also seems to be embracing mediocrity by encouraging “drive by” education. Where the test becomes more important than the information retained, and trophies are given for just showing up. When winning one used to mean something.

The UMC bases its curriculum on cumulative knowledge. Each lesson, class, and workshop is built upon the knowledge earned and learned in the previous one. Our students are encouraged to continue in each class and workshop for as many semesters as it takes until they develop the skills and knowledge, and can demonstrate both in real world situations.

The Uptown Music Collective is committed to always being a part of the conversation and solution to the issues facing our young people as we move further into the 21st century. Our success in this is clearly demonstrated publicly by our fully engaged peer group and our over 60 highly successful public performances each year. That public success, however, is only made possible through the private victories that happen every day in our lesson rooms, classrooms, workshops, and student showcases.

To continue to make those victories happen each year we need you, our community, to partner with us. Please join us today in our efforts to change lives through music.

Our goal for this campaign is to raise $15,000 to cover the cost of classes and workshops for the 2016-2017 school year. That amount covers the cost of teacher salaries, facility and material expenses, and administrative costs for the entire school year. 150 supporters giving $100 each is one of many ways we could achieve that goal…

By giving to this year’s annual campaign, you will directly impact our students in an immediate and meaningful way. As always, our communities support means the world to our organization, myself, and most importantly, to the young people we serve.

Dave Brumbaugh – Executive Director, Uptown Music Collective

P.S. There are many ways to hit our goal of $15,000. Every donation, large or small, brings us a step closer to being able to continue making a difference in the lives of young people through the life-changing power of music.
