Basic Skills Workshop (Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keyboards and Vocals)

An extension of UMC Private Lessons, the Basic Skills Workshops cover the required curriculum for each instrument in a group setting. Working together over this year long course, students develop a sense of group camaraderie while also learning to play together. These workshops are divided into four levels depending on the instrument being studied.

Intro to Rock/Blues Workshop

Intro to Rock and Intro to Blues Workshops are available to students with one year of private lesson experience. Both workshops focus on learning to play together as a group and the history and techniques of each style.

Prerequisite: 1 Year of Private Lessons

Intro to Jazz Workshop

ID: IJW

Learn what the style of Jazz is all about in this exciting workshop. Study improvisation, chord voicing, comping, group dynamics and the keys to creating a great solo.

Prerequisite: Intermediate Level

Intro to Classical Guitar

ID: ICGW

Intro to Classical Guitar introduces the aspiring student to the high art of solo performance. Students develop strong finger-picking technique, improved reading skills and a stronger understanding of music through the study of this rewarding guitar style.

Performance Workshops (Rock, Blues, Jazz, Classical Guitar)

Performance Workshops take over where the introductory workshops left off. This class teaches students the melodic, harmonic and rhythmic vocabulary of the chosen style along with its history and important players. The students then go out in the community and perform the music they have studied as part of the school’s performance program.

Prerequisite: The introductory equivalent of each Performance Workshop

Songwriter's Workshop

ID: SW

This is a songwriter’s roundtable, where aspiring songwriters meet weekly to perform songs for each other and receive feedback on their efforts.

Prerequisite: Songwriting 1

Songwriter's Performance Workshop

ID: SPW

An extension of the Songwriter’s Workshop where students perform their original compositions at community events as part of the UMC Performance Program.

Heavy Metal Workshop

ID: HMW

A workshop requested this year by UMC students will focus on the techniques, effects and the ‘performance skills required to perform this ‘powerful style.

Prerequisite: Intermediate Level
