Basic Award Criteria

• Applicants must show financial need

• Applicants must be continuously enrolled in the complete Collective school year (3 semesters); the student receiving the scholarship should partake in the maximum number of classes and workshops allowed

• Applicants must participate in all showcases (recitals), special events, and volunteer activities (whenever available)

The Alice Hileman Memorial Scholarship

Need-based, full scholarship for a current student age 13 to 18. Interview required to apply.

The Lew Gilberti Memorial Scholarship

Need-based, full scholarship for a new or current student age 13 to 18. Recipient selected by the First Community Foundation Partnership of PA (FCFP)

The Brickyard Scholarship

Need-based, full scholarship for a current student grade 5th thru 12th. Interviewed and selected by the UMC Scholarship Committee.

The Stonehouse Open Mic Scholarship

Need-based, full scholarship for a current student grade 5th thru 12th. Interviewed and selected by the UMC Scholarship Committee.

The River Valley Transit Scholarships

Need-based, full scholarship for a new or current student age 10 to 18. Interviewed and selected by the UMC Scholarship Committee. Two available.

The Blaise Alexander Family Scholarships

Need-based, full scholarship for a current student age 10 to 18. Interviewed and selected by the UMC Scholarship Committee. Two available.

The UPMC Susquehanna Scholarships

Need-based, full scholarship for a current student age 10 to 18. Interviewed and selected by the UMC Scholarship Committee. Two available.

The Angelina’s Song Scholarship

Merit or need-based, full scholarship for a new or current student age 10 to 18 who has been diagnosed with a critical or chronic illness or who aspires to become a musical therapist. Additional essay required. Interviewed and selected by the UMC Scholarship Committee.

Required attachments

• Completed application IN BLUE OR BLACK INK ONLY!;

• Essay describing in detail your passion for music, the role it plays in your life now, and how you see the role of music continuing in your future. Include specific musical goals, interests, and other aspects that you consider important to this application. Creative responses are encouraged. (not to exceed 2 pages; typed preferred over handwritten)

• One letter of recommendation from a person who is familiar with your goals and attributes. Inform your reference that the purpose of the letter is to secure a music scholarship at the UMC.

• Parents’ most recent tax return (the first two pages of your 1040 form) and most recent 4 pay stubs (required to verify financial need). Note: Please black out your Social Security Number on these documents; Parents may write a letter indicating any unusual or personal circumstances which warrant the need for the scholarship that may not be easily reflected in other attachments.

Additional Scholarship Requirements:

• The student will, according to his/her instructors, show progress and a desire to learn in all UMC classes, workshops, and lessons;

• The student will maintain passing grades in all public, private, or cyber school classes. The student will submit a copy of each report card received during the length of their scholarship;

• The student will provide 21 hours (7 hours per semester) of volunteer time to the UMC over the course of the school year for which the scholarship is provided. The student will need to submit proof of their 7 volunteer hours at the end of each semester;

• The student will maintain healthy habits and relationships at home. Problems and issues to be detailed in a letter from student’s parents to UMC Staff; 

• The student will demonstrate proper behavior and etiquette at the UMC and its events and follow all policies of the UMC as outlined at http://uptownmusic.org/umc-policies-and-procedures/

• The student will be evaluated at the end of each semester by his/her private lesson, class and workshop instructors, as well as the UMC Scholarship Committee.

• Additional requirements may be added at any time through the length of the scholarship at the discretion of the UMC Staff and/ or UMC Scholarship Committee.
